Sam the Smilodon
Smilodons were sabre-toothed cats that lived a long, long time ago.
This story’s about a cub named Sam who was always on the go.
Smilodons loved to sleep, they slept most of the day.
But Sam did not want to lie and sleep, he wanted to go and play!
One day Sam was playing catch with his friends out on the grass.
Sam was the best, or so he thought, because he was so very fast!
But once when Sam was running fast to make sure he caught the ball,
He stumbled and he tripped and then he had a nasty fall.
Sam rolled down a grassy bank and into a freezing river,
The water was cold, Sam tried to swim but the water made him shiver.
The river carried Sam away to a place he’d never been before,
The river flowed into the sea and he was washed up on the shore.
He pulled himself up on his feet and looked around in awe,
All around were bearded seals, creatures he’d never seen before.
“Hi there little long toothed cat” a creature said to Sam
“I think you look a little lost, but I’ll help you if I can.
“The forest is where I live but there are no trees nearby,
Can you help me find my home? I really want to try!”
The bearded seal said to Sam “First walk across the sand
Then head toward the mountains and keep heading on inland.”
Sam said thanks and then set off but soon found a canyon in his path,
It stretched as far as the eye could see, he knew he could not pass.
But just then he saw above and eagle circling high.
“Excuse me mister eagle sir, can you help me fly?”
“I cannot help you fly” He said “but I can give you a ride.
He swooped down and picked Sam up and took him to the other side.
Sam said his thanks and off he went but found a swamp was in his way.
Another hurdle for Sam to cross, it was really was not his day!
As he pondered how to cross a turtle caught his eye,
He wondered if she could help, he knew he had to try.
“Friendly turtle can you help me get to the other side?”
“Of course, oh little Smilodon, I’ll give you a ride.”
Sam climbed onto the turtle’s shell and the ride through the swamp began.
The turtle carried Sam across, on and on she swam.
Once at the far side of the swamp he could see the woods at last!
Sam thanked the turtle many times then ran home so very fast.
He ran across the grassland quick and saw his fiends near to the trees.
He headed straight to where they stood and they greeted him with glee.
“We’re so glad that you’re OK, after you fell into that stream
We thought you may not come back home; we did not dare to dream!”
“No need to worry, here I am! But the journey home was mad.
An eagle, seal and turtle helped, such an adventure I had!”
“I think next time that we play catch I’ll be a bit more wary,
Getting swept out to the sea really was quite scary!”
