Ben the Cave Bear
Many years in the past when mammoths liked to roam,
The biggest bears that ever lived made deep dark caves their home.
Ben was a young bear cub who lived with his mum and dad.
He found he was preoccupied with the sweetest food he’d ever had.
Ben wanted to eat honey every single day,
But his parents would not let him, he never got his way!
So early one morning while his parents were asleep
Ben snuck out on a quest to find honey for him to eat.
Honey comes from beehives, Ben knew this was the case,
So he trotted off into the woods to find a bee for him to chase.
Ben knew bees liked flowers, so he hunted here and there,
But Ben lived in a pine forest and flowers here were rare!
So he headed out into the plains and searched amongst the grass,
There were flowers here a plenty and he saw a bee last!
The bee flew amongst the mammoth herd and Ben continued on his chase,
He followed as the bee buzzed on when he spotted a friendly face.
“Hi there Mike” Ben said to his friend.
“Do you want to play” Mike asked.
“I’d love to Mike but I can’t right now I’m in the middle of an important task.”
“Can I help?” Said Mike to Ben.
“Perhaps, I’m trying to find
Some lovely honey for me to eat I just can’t get it off my mind!”
“If you’re looking for a beehive I can help you if you like.”
“That would be great, which way is it?”
“This way!” Ben went to follow Mike.
They trotted off across the plains and soon they came upon
A furry heap amongst the grass, it was a sleeping Smilodon.
“The beehive’s there” whispered Mike. He pointed to a tree.
And right above the Smilodon was a hive they both could see.
“How’d we get the beehive down?”
“Shh! Quietly as you can!”
They turned to see Sam the Smilodon. “Please don’t wake my uncle Dan.”
“My uncle Dan gets grouchy if he wakes up too soon,
It’s not something you’d want to do it may just spell your doom!”
Sam had been playing on the plains with Gary the ground sloth,
Sam led Mike and Ben to where Gary was nibbling on some moss.
Once all together the planning soon began.
How would they get the beehive down? They quickly formed a plan.
Gary searched and found some vines, Sam climbed up the tree,
He looped the vines around the branch as quietly as can be.
Sam passed the vine ends to Mike who gripped them with his trunk.
He began to pull; the vines went taught and they watched as the branch sunk.
Ben prepared to grab the hive and soon the branch came near,
But suddenly a mighty crack rattled through his ears.
The branch had snapped, Dan woke up, the hive began to fall.
Dan jumped up onto his feet and began to chase them all!
The four children were terrified, they all ran for their lives,
But the bees were also angry and they all emerged from their beehive.
The closest creature to the hive was Sam’s big uncle Dan.
They flew so quick they caught him up and the stinging soon began.
The stinging made Dan slow down and the children got away
And when they stopped Gary said “that’s enough excitement for one day!”
Sam then said, “That was fun, can we do that again?”
Mike said, “You must be joking!” and then they looked a Ben.
“I too think that was lots of fun but if I tell the truth,
I’ve given honey lots of thought and I think I’ve lost my sweet-tooth!”
They all laughed and then they played until it was time for tea.
Ben headed home, back to his cave and was glad his food was savoury!
