Gary the Ground Sloth
Far away in Rattidon, there lived a rat named Rob,
And one day when he grew up, he knew he’d need to find a job.
He studied all the options, and tried so hard to find
A career he felt he suited, but he just could not make up his mind.
Well that was the case until one day when a wizard came to town,
Rob saw him cast a magic spell and then his world turned upside down.
He knew right then and right there, what he was meant to be,
Rob would become a Rat Wizard, that was his destiny!
Rob enrolled in Wizard School and knew that come what may,
He would try his very best, every single day.
His teacher’s name was Mr Spark who made it very clear
That all his class must pass the test at the end of every year.
The year one test that had been set was to make a classmate fall asleep
“Just swish your wand and say the words and they should be off their feet.”
Rob practiced ‘til exhaustion, he practiced all he could,
But no matter how hard he tried his friend Dave stayed firmly stood.
Dave could do it easily and just like every time before,
In seconds Rob was off his feet, sleeping soundly on the floor.
Rob later woke up groggily, his friend Dave was stood nearby.
“Why can’t I do it Dave?” he asked, “What else is there that I can try?”
“Perhaps the answer lies in books” Dave suggested to his friend,
“The Library here has thousands, there must be one that they can lend.”
Mr Spark had made a list of all the useful books,
Rob had read every one, there must be somewhere else to look.
Wazzard’s Wizard’s School for Boys was sited right next door
To Werville’s Witches School for Girls and their library shared a floor.
He waited until after dark and silently he crept
Into the witches’ library while all the others soundly slept.
He searched amongst the witches’ books, he searched the whole night through,
And just as dawn was breaking, he found a book he thought might do.
The day of the year end test came, and Rob devised a plan,
“Wands at the ready” said Mr Spark and the testing then began.
“Best of luck” Dave said to Rob and Dave gave Rob a wink,
“Before we start” Rob said to Dave, how ‘bout we share a good luck drink?”
Rob presented two small cups, Dave drank his with a nod,
Rob swished his wand and said the words, Dave was soon sleeping like a log.
Rob had passed his year end test, he punched the air with glee,
That night he took a potions book back to Werville’s library.
Year two started well for Rob, the weeks flew by with a blink,
But several months into the year, his heart began to sink.
He found magic theory easy, and wizard history too,
But soon he came to realise that there was one thing he could not do.
He did not seem to have the skill to cast a magic spell,
As the year end test drew nearer, Rob knew that he would not do well.
The challenge Mr Spark had set was to teleport away,
Find a local item then return in that same day.
To teleport was really hard, there must be something he could try,
He gazed out of the window, then something caught his eye.
He saw a witch ride on a broom, she raced across the sky,
And as he watched in silent awe, he thought of something he could try.
After dark he snook next door and found the book and broom he sought,
Then scuttled back to Wazzard’s school before he could get caught.
At night he read his borrowed book learning all that he might need,
Until he knew the theory of riding a broomstick at full speed.
He then snook out into the dark with his broom and book in hand,
He found he had a natural skill to make the broom fly fast and land.
The day of the year end test came, and Rob was told where he must go,
He must travel to the far north pole and come back with some fresh snow.
One by one, his year two friends began to fade from view,
And when no-one else was looking, Rob made himself vanish too.
He dived behind a boulder then crept as quietly as can be,
To where he’d hid is witch’s broom, in the woods, behind a tree.
He jumped upon his stolen broom and zoomed into the sky,
He found his snow then headed back as fast as he could fly.
As he flew down into the woods he was startled by a shout,
The shock made Rob fall off his broom as Mr Spark jumped out.
Rob landed hard on Mr Spark which kept Rob from much harm,
But Mr Spark yelled out in pain, he’d broken one leg and one arm!
As Mr Spark lay on the ground Rob said, “I’ll be right back!”
He scuttled off into the woods and returned with a bulging sack.
The sack was filled with plants and herbs which he quickly mashed together,
He lay the mixture on the limbs and wrapped the wounds in heather.
Rob muttered just a couple words then counted up to four,
The broken limbs had been fixed; Mr Spark stared at Rob in awe.
“Young Rob” he said “I am amazed at the skill you have shown here,
But this isn’t wizard craft you’ve done its witch’s art I fear.
“I saw you sneak away today and then I saw you creep,
And I suspected that just like last year you had a plan to cheat!
“I noticed something odd last year, I saw you give your friend a drink,
And a book was lost form Werville’s and all this made me think.
“So I kept my beady eye on you and my suspicions were proved right!
I’m expelling you from Wazzard’s, I want you to leave this very night!”
“Cheater’s never prosper! That’s a lesson you need to know
That’s why you must leave Wazzard’s, that’s why you have to go.”
Rob was distraught, his dreams were crushed, he slumped down against a tree,
But his woe was seen by Mr Spark who had some sympathy.
“I don’t think wizarding’s for you, that’s not your destiny.
But please do not despair young man, you have other skills that I can see.
“I think you’d make a better witch; I’ve seen what you can do,
Potions, healing, flying brooms; witching’s a better fit for you.”
“But witching’s just a trade for girls!” Rob was as confused as can be.
“There’s a first time for everything, you’ll be fine, just wait and see.”
So Rob transferred to Werville’s and though at first he was behind,
He soon caught up and then excelled and now a finer witch you’ll never find.
And one day when he grew up, he knew he’d need to find a job.
