Mike the Baby Mammoth
Mike the baby mammoth loved to play and play,
After eating all the grass he needs, he’d play for all the day.
But playing on his own was dull, so he went to find a friend.
He searched around the mammoth herd, but his search soon had to end.
“Mummy, Daddy, I can’t find a playmate just for me,
All the mammoths here are far too old, they just want to be left be!”
“We mammoths do not like to play,” said his mum between each chew
“We eat and sleep and find more grass, but playing is not something we do.”
“If mammoths do not play I’m off! It’s friends I want to find
To play with each and every day, I’m through with my own kind!”
He wandered off into the woods and soon he came upon
A family of smilodons, sleeping, all but one!
“Shh” said the wakeful smilodon, “my family’s all asleep,
But I wish they’d wake up so we can go play hide and seek!”
“I can play!” said Mike with glee, “it’s just the rules I need to know”
“Just go and hide” the smilodon said, “I’ll find you once you go.”
While Mike searched for a hiding place, he found a ground sloth by his home.
Mike wondered if he wanted friends “Are you here all alone?”
“Why yes! My mum has gone to find some leaves for me to eat.”
“Do you want to play?” Mike asked.
“Why yes! Oh what a treat!”
“I’m playing hide and seek” Mike said, “with a friendly smilodon.
Come with me and we’ll find a place” and soon they both had gone.
The mammoth and the ground sloth searched and soon they found a cave.
“Lets hide in here,” Mike said to the sloth, “It’s dark, I hope you’re feeling brave.”
They crept into the deep dark cave, stepping quietly with such care,
But they both tripped over a furry bear, his roar echoed through the air!
Terrified they both ran out, but the smilodon was there.
They collided in a great big heap and were chased out by the bear.
The cave bear stopped before the heap then laughed so much he fell.
“What a silly bunch you all look like, such a tale I’ll later tell!”
The unlikely four soon made friends and played for hours in the snow,
But the sun soon sank, and they knew it was almost time to go.
Mike trotted home to find his herd, he had some friends at last!
He could play with his friends every day, after eating all his grass.
