Gary the Ground Sloth
Gary was a ground sloth, he lived amongst the trees,
Much of his time most every day was spent eating lots of leaves.
Gary wondered many times about the leaves up high.
He thought perhaps the tastiest leaves grew closer to the sky.
Gary asked his ground sloth friends if they ever thought
About climbing trees to get those leaves but heard a quick retort.
“we ground sloths are not made to climb, the clue is in the name!”
Another ground sloth also said “I think you are insane!”
“I’m not crazy!” Gary said “I’ll find a way to climb”
He went to find some different friends “I’ll see you in some time!”
Mike the mammoth was the first friend that Gary was to find
“Hi there Mike, can you help with something that’s on my mind?”
“Sure” Mike said “what is it?” And Gary then replied
“I want to get the tree top leaves, but I can’t climb” he sighed.
“I don’t think I can help with that, not me, I’m not the one.
But I can think of one who might, how ‘bout Sam the Smilodon?”
“Of course!” Said Gary excitedly “I’ve seen him climbing lots,
Perhaps he’s the one who can help me reach the high treetops!”
Gary wandered off again and searched for his friend Sam
“I bet Sam can help” he said to himself “I really hope he can.”
Gary Searched amongst the trees and found Sam in the Woods.
He and his brother and sister were playing in the mud.
“Hello Sam, can you help me learn to climb up high?
I hope to get up to the leaves that grow closest to the sky.”
“Sure!” I can help just do this,” He dug his claws into a tree
And started to ascend the trunk “like this, just follow me!”
Gary tried his best to climb but his claws were far to blunt.
No matter how hard he tried he could not grip the trunk.
“Thank you, Sam, for trying to help but that will not work for me,
I’ll never get the tasty leaves at the top of every tree.”
Gary walked off gloomily and headed for his home
When he crossed paths with Ben the bear “Hi” he said, “but please leave me alone.”
“Why so sad?” Ben asked of him.
“I cannot learn to climb!”
“I told the other sloths I would, but I have failed this time.”
“Why do you want to climb?” Ben asked.
“To get to the leaves!” He said.
“I have a plan! Come with me” Gary followed and Ben led.
Ben took Gary to the biggest, tallest, greenest tree.
“I can’t climb that!” Gary said.
“Don’t worry, just rely on me!”
Ben began to climb the tree with such amazing skill.
Gary watched then heard Ben shout “Just wait, soon you’ll have your fill!”
Soon it seemed to start to start to rain, well, that’s what Gary believed
Until he came to realise the sky was raining leaves!
Gary dared to look up high and was very glad he did,
He could see his friend stripping leaves off every branch and twig!
When Ben climbed back down the tree leaves lay thickly on the floor.
“Wow” Gary said to Ben “thank you! I could not have hoped for more.”
Gary tried a tree top leaf and grinned from ear to ear.
“These really are the nicest leaves that I have had all year!”
Just then by chance his ground sloth friends came strolling through the woods.
“What leaves are these?” One asked him.
“Tree top leaves! They taste so good!”
“Ben the bear got them down, you’re right we sloths can’t climb,
But I am just the luckiest sloth to have Ben as a friend of mine!”
